For an illustrative case, a researcher is supplied with one source-chain transaction and one destination-chain transaction. The first task is to verify that both references resolve on their stated networks. The next is to determine what evidence would link them. A screenshot containing both hashes is a useful lead, but it does not automatically prove the mechanism.

Identify the assets independently

For a specific inquiry, preserve the relevant protocol identifiers and evidence exposed by the source.

Other mechanisms may have different structures. Identify the actual protocol and its documentation rather than imposing one bridge model on every apparent cross-chain movement. When the provider does not expose enough information to connect the records, the correct result may remain “relationship unverified.”

The research methodology separates a general technical explanation from a case-specific observation. Apply that distinction carefully here. A page describing how a bridge operates is contextual support. The evidence linking your selected source and destination records must come from the particular activity being investigated.

Keep three kinds of time separate

Cross-chain comparisons often involve several timestamps. Preserve the time associated with each source record, the time you retrieved each view, and any protocol-specific timing relevant to the proposed link. Avoid compressing them into one field labeled “transfer time.”

For a hypothetical comparison, a destination record appears several minutes after a source record. That ordering may be consistent with a proposed process, but timing alone does not establish causation. Another unrelated record could occur in the same interval. Treat the sequence as context until the connecting evidence is verified.

Normalize times to a common timezone for comparison while retaining the original displayed values. Note when a source lacks a timestamp or shows a different type of time. Reconcile quantities without assuming equality

A proposed cross-chain relationship may involve fees, different amount representations, or more than one activity record. Do not assume that identical displayed quantities are required, or that matching quantities are sufficient. First identify what each number represents, its unit, and the relevant protocol context.

Consider a hypothetical source record of 120 units and a destination record of 119.5 units. The difference is 0.5 units, but that arithmetic does not explain the cause. A fee is one possible explanation only if supporting records establish it. Record the difference as a calculation and the fee explanation as unverified until the source supports it.

Use separate columns for observed quantities, calculations, and interpretation. Avoid combining unlike tokens merely because their symbols look similar. Recognize when a service boundary changes the question

A user may describe a cross-chain experience even when the available evidence only shows interactions with a service on two networks. In that situation, the public records may not reveal the service's internal accounting or the relationship between a deposit and a withdrawal. The missing connection should not be drawn as an observed on-chain edge.

Preserve any legitimately supplied service reference separately from the blockchain records. Make clear whether it comes from an account receipt, support correspondence, or protocol event. These are different evidence types and should not be blended into a single supposedly trustless proof.

Do not bury a missing protocol link in a footnote while writing a confident cross-chain conclusion above it.
